Artist Statement
My still-lifes and portraiture often explore the strangeness of depicting space, depth and form on a 2-dimensional surface. I enjoy creating space. I often tell my students that a realist artist is a magician, since we are essentially illusionists trying to make it seem like an object is there when it is not.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and was lucky to have an art education that inspired me to create and teach art. After graduating from Northern Illinois University with a degree in art education, I started a family with my husband Michael Caulfield and moved to Keene, New Hampshire. The community in Keene was amazing for nurturing a young artist. There I worked independently selling my work in galleries in the Northeast, entering juried shows, and teaching workshops in the community and abroad. I was fortunate to find success in those endeavors. When my youngest child was old enough for school I started working in the K-12 school system which, although it has altered the focus of my personal artwork, has been so rewarding. I love that I can encourage another generation with the power of personal expression and artistic skill. I believe that no matter your skill level, making art is a powerful tool for mental well being and without a strong public art education system many would miss out.
In 2013 I moved to Washington state near Portland, Oregon and I began selling my work at the Portland Saturday Market. My work in the past focused on a contemporary twist on traditional still life and portraiture using colored pencil as my primary medium. While selling my work at the Portland Saturday Market, I lightened up the seriousness of my work and started making anthropomorphic animal portraits, still in my realist style, but with a humor that might be inspired by the middle school students I teach or the playfulness of Portland. Once again I have been uprooted, now to the charming city of Edmonds, WA, just North of Seattle. In the past year I have been working on reviving my love for contemporary still life and look forward to where this new venture will take me.
