Some things I find crazy/funny
On academia
Academic genealogy
My academic tree. Quite mysterious to me...
-How do you get so much reproduction with so few females? (zero female ancestor... talk about gender bias in science)
-I reproduce alone, like a good old Daphnia (it does not seem quite fun)
-Where did most of my "children" disappear? What guided the choice?
-What's up with Michigan, it seems all over the place!
-What does the "?" above my PhD advisor (Michel Loreau) mean? That he was created on the seventh day? That no-one could really determine his origin?
Publication system
We pay much to publish (often too much), we pay much to read (often too little)
We prepare all the writing, do all the editing.
We manage most of the editorial process
We do the reviews for free
(The logical conclusion is that we may not be very intelligent)
An interesting initiative: PCI
Prediction is hard, especially about the future ;)
Technological solutions? (a hard conciliation)
Quite a few people still believe that we will solve environmental issues through technological progress.
On a long timescale, eg since the industrial revolution, technological progress is largely correlated to environmental deterioration.
People increasingly resist technological progress even when it really is progress (eg, anti-vaccine)
