Goal
To go beyond memorization (only) to conceptual understanding.
We think of conceptual understanding as the ability to know more than isolated facts and methods, but to have the ability to transfer knowledge into new situations and apply it to new contexts.
For example, a student can memorize the functions and parts (e.g. engine, brake, etc.) of a car, but not know how to drive a car. However, a student can have minimal knowledge of these parts and with a little training be able to drive a car, and be able to drive the vehicle under new situations (e.g. new roads, different weathers, etc.).
We feel it is important for a beginner to understand concepts before learning the finer details, which will allow them to acquire more expertise.
It is how we learn, it is how we grow who we are and what we can do.
