Princess Ann by Martha Thompson  US $250

Princess Ann by Martha Thompson - NIADA Artist dolls are for sale. Please email  niadadollcollector@gmail.com

This exquisite example of a portrait doll of Princess Anne as a child, is an amazing likeness.  She was created by legendary NIADA Artist, Martha Thompson, who was a charter member of NIADA. Princess Anne has a beautifully sculpted head and breastplate of porcelain, with moulded blonde curls. It is possible to just make out a faint M and T at the base at the back of the plate but a printed mark reading Martha  Do Thompson can be easily distinguished on the cloth body.  Her arms and legs are also of porcelain, and her finely painted face depicts a typical English-rose complexioned child.  The doll stands 11 inches tall and was made I believe in the late 1950's/early 1960's. I purchased her in the early 1990's and she is still wearing the same pale blue smocked dress and white pants that she wore at the time of purchase. I dont know if these are  the original set of clothing, as the clothes are unmarked. This is a truly rare and wonderful find.

NIADA Artist Martha Thompson passed away in 1964, reportedly from the effects of porcelain dust.  A large body of Martha's work is owned by the Chicago Museum of Art

Princess Grace by Gertrude Florian  US $250.00

Princess Grace by Gertrude Florian - NIADA Artist dolls are for sale. Please email  niadadollcollector@gmail.com

This is a doll that I purchased from a dealer at the NIADA  doll convention in 1992.  She was sculpted by early NIADA Artist Gertrude Florian in porcelain and has a lovely serene face, sculpted hair with a tiara, and a cloth body.  I am unsure of the year that she was created, but as the marriage took place between Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier in 1956, it would have most likely been in the 1960's. The doll is dressed in pale blue satin, and features embedded jewels around the neckline. The dress has some discolouring. Examples of the work of NIADA Artist Gertrude  Florian are now difficult to find. This doll stands 14 inches tall.

Gertrude Florian was a charter member of NIADA.

She is made entirely of cloth, stands 17 inches tall, and is one of a kind, as are all of Noni's dolls.  The cloth body construction is a feature of Noni's work, and the finished result, a reflection of the high standard that this artist sets for herself. I purchased her direct from the artist, in 1989 at the NIADA convention of that year.

The Bird Lady by NIADA Artist Charlene Westling is a one of a kind sculpture that was created in composition material, in 1993.  This was a change of medium for Charlene whose earlier dolls were sculpted in cloth.  The doll is very much an interpretation of the the character from Mary Poppins' "Feed the Birds" sequence.  She is seated on a wooden beach, with metal side, and holds a little seed in one hand, and a bird in the other.  A very special piece, that I purchased from Charlene at the NIADA convention of 1993.
