2. THE INTERNET / WWW

With the wealth of archives, transcriptions and indexes now available on the World Wide Web (www), it’s great for the armchair family researcher.

Large established well-known sites like Ancestry, FindMyPast and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)’s FamilySearch are tried, true and trusted, however there are always "scammers" prepared to rip people off.

If you come across a previously unknown or new commercial site offering you access to wonderful records or direction on where to find them (for a price), check it out before handing over your credit or debit card details - or any personal information. Do a search on the Internet and find out what you can about the site and its reputation. For example, say this fictitious website is called One Million and One Records. Do a Google search, e.g. "One Million and One Records" feedback.
