Reminder to NYers experiencing storm related aftermath: Unless lives are at risk, please, call 311 to report conditions. Use 911 for life-threatening emergencies only. Someone trapped under a tree? Call 911. A tree down on a street or car,
no one injured? Call 311 or visit 311 online if you can (http://www.nyc.gov/apps/311/); you can also text 311-692.
ALSO when callling 911 for life-threatening emergencies, hold the line; do not hang up and call back; doing so delays help and reverts the call to the end of the queue.
General tips for 911, compiled from experienced NYPD operators and police communications supervisors, follow.
Police operators are trained to handle a variety of calls and emergencies. Although assisted by some technology, there are essential things the public can do when calling 911:
1. GIVE AN ADDRESS - The location of the emergency is the first...
