Accommodation

All new faculty are eligible for IISc supplied housing. Accommodation may be provided in the main campus itself, or in Krishnaraja or Arybhata, both within walkable distance from the main campus, or in Vijnanapura 2-3 km North of the main campus. In addition, new faculty may be given temporary accommodation (typically in IISc guest house) until their allotted apartment is available for occupation.

The choice of living on campus is a very individual one. It is a stress and pollution free commute to the department. Many people walk to their departments. There is easy access to campus facilities like the school, gymkhana, stores, banks.

You are eligible (as an assistant professor) to get accommodation under the director discretionary quota (DDQ). Indicate your requirement in your letter of acceptance. Assistant Professors may be able to choose a two bedroom apartment (either a C-type 600 sq ft apartment or a D-type 800 sq ft). D-type apartments are not easily available in the main campus, but may be available in Vijnanapura. Subsequently, you may have to move an apartment allotted according to seniority. See housing information for more details on seniority allotments. Recently, three bedroom quarters (E-type, 1000 sq ft) were allotted to assistant professors based on their seniority, but only in Vijnanapura.

If you need temporary accommodation (from one to three months) in the guest house upon arrival, and until your allotted apartment is ready, indicate this in your acceptance letter to the Chairman of your department. Some departments have one or two apartments ready for occupation. Enquire with the Chairman of the department.

If you are staying in institute provided accommodation, you have to pay electricity charges (as per use) and water charges (fixed Rs. 50/- per month). If you are staying on campus, these will be automatically deducted from your salary on a monthly basis and the charges will appear on your salary slip. If you are staying in Vijnanapura, Krishnaraja, or Aryabhata apartments, only the water charges (fixed Rs. 40/- per month) is automatically deducted from your salary on a monthly basis, but you pay electricity charges. Note that if the allotted apartment is not within the main campus (i.e., it is in Vijnanapura, Krishnaraja, Aryabhata), chances of power interruption are higher.
