Over the last 10 months there have been considerable changes in the
services available to refugees in Guilford County. One question that
has remained is will the English Language Training services continue
after December 31, 2010. Today we are able to announce that a new
agency, the New Arrivals Institute (NAI) has been formed to continue
these services beginning January 1, 2011.
Through a partnership with Montagnard Dega Association we are able to
ensure that members of the refugee community will continue to be as
well-served as they have been in the past 13 years at the New Arrival
School and our satellite programs. The program will continue in
January 2011 as NAI with the same client services and partnerships
with agencies and congregations throughout Greensboro. We look
forward to identifying new ways to meet needs, and to having more
community partners and congregations involved.
There continue to be fewer dollars allocated for individual case
management and employment services while the expectation remains for
refugees to quickly become self-sufficient and self-sustaining. Over
400 refugees are expected to arrive in Greensboro in 2011, and there
are over 6,000 who have arrived in the past 10 years. We will assist
any of these arrivals that request help, and the New Arrivals
Institute envisions being a support and liaison to help Guilford
County welcome these new arrivals into our community.
Our mission is:
“Assisting Refugees and Immigrants to Self-Sufficiency and U.S.
Citizenship Through Education."
Our vision is:
“Assistance to achieve self sufficiency through English Language
Training, Employment Readiness, Health Education, Community
Orientation, Citizenship Preparedness and Early childhood transitional
classes. Additionally, the institute will act as a community liaison
to educate individuals and agencies about newly arrived refugees and
immigrants.”
