The Salem State Log
Don't blink, you might miss Salem State's All-Star Track squad.
The college community may not know much about Salem State College Track, but that’s only because they’re so fast that you might not see them.
“This years men’s and women’s programs qualified more athletes for [the] NCAA New England Division III championships than any other SSC track program in years past,” said Coach Dennis Floyd. The teams qualified 12 runners in all, seven men and five women.
The performance of the day at the NCAA NE DIII regional championships came from sprinter Eddie Bynum. Bynum ran a meet record time of 6.3 seconds in the 55 meter dash. This feat earned the Viking speedster an automatic qualification to the NCAA National Championships in that discipline. Bynum is ranked third in the nation among Division III sprinters.
The Lady Vikings 4X400 meter relay team ran a season best time of 4:25.10 seconds at the championships. Also representing the women was senior captain Michelle Blunda, who placed twelfth in the hurdles and matched her season best pole vault with a jump of nine feet.
The men’s relay teams also excelled at regionals. The 4X400 meter squad of Svet Wilson, Dave Chesna, Davidson Cimia, and Bynum posted a time that qualifies them for the ECAC (East Coast Athletic Conference) championships. Salem’s 4X200 meter crew also qualified for the ECAC championships. That group of runners consists of Bynum, Cimia, Andrew Ames, and freshman Jeff Hajj.
