While the US as a whole is experiencing diversity is various areas, the structure of the family in the one that is important to understand in the field of education. Being sensitive to the needs of children from diverse families requires understanding the values, structures and resources their families have, as well as the challenges they face and require support in overcoming. According to Curenton & Iruka (2013) "For ECE programs and teachers to be most effective with children and families, there has to be a foundation of trust, which emerges from a strong relationship. That is, in order for children to experience the rich benefits of the classroom, they have to feel comfortable and engaged. Similarly, families must also feel comfortable and value the work of ECE programs and teachers." (Curenton & Iruka, 2013, pg. 226). Creating effective home-school partnerships is paramount in supporting children's growth, as well as strengthening the connection between family and school collaboration.
One example of supporting diverse children can be viewed at The Monarch School.
