Faun's ongoing restoration plan continues to be implemented, including general maintenance and substantial upgrades over time, including brass, varnish and paint. Each year, she receives a minimum of 1-2 coats of exterior varnish, building on her base of 12 to 14 coats. Her brass is polished and coated with a protective polyurethane coating called Polane. She is hauled out and inspected regularly, her bottom is cleaned & painted and her anodes replaced every 12-18 months.
In 2022, her upper canvas deck was painted and she received 2-4 coats of varnish on her exterior, plus 2-4 coats of varnish on her interior in the salon/helm area. Her interior brass was polished and coated anew. The large aft starboard window was replaced. Her hull paint was touched up. Her waste treatment system was upgraded and her Internet access was upgraded with the addition of a WiFi/Cellular router.
In 2021, her forward canvas deck was painted. The varnish on the port side was taken down to wood and six coats were built back up. Elsewhere on the exterior, she received 2 coats of varnish. Her brass was polished can coated as needed. She received new bottom and boot stripe paint and touch ups of her hull paint.
In 2020, she received two coats of varnish on portions of her exterior. Her hull was repainted with 4 coats of Epifanes Yacht Enamel.
In 2017-19 she received two coats of varnish on her exterior each year.
In 2016, her canvas decks were painted and she received 2 coats of varnish on her exterior. Her brass was polished and coated where needed.
In 2015, her entire interior was painted and she received 1-2 coats of varnish on her exterior. Some of her exterior brass was re-polished and coated.
In 2013-14 Faun was hauled out for 15 months, during which time most of her ribs, frames & planks below the waterline were replaced. 65 planks were replaced with straight and steam-bent virgin growth yellow cedar sourced from wood kept for the purpose. 68 new ribs and frames were replaced. Nearly 6,000 fasteners were used. Her fuel tanks were replaced with two new stainless-steel tanks, 60 gallons each, for a total of 120 gallons fuel capacity. Her teak cap rail aft was replaced at this time, as the original could not be preserved. At that time, her hull was long boarded and repainted above the waterline with Fine Paints of Europe Hollandac Base Ultra High Gloss White Paint, a high quality European paint that is gaining popularity in the US for its ultra high gloss surface. Her bottom paint and boot stripe were also refreshed, and her brass polished.
In 2008, her entire interior was re-varnished.
In 2004, her transom was mostly replaced and splined, some ribs were replaced, and much refastening and re-caulking occurred. Her electrical system was upgraded to triple the house battery capacity with two 8D Rolls batteries and a 2500 watt inverter was added. A front loading freezer was added in the lazarette as part of this project. New varnished teak boxes were added port and starboard to house the inverter and provide storage and steps into the boat. Her exterior was completely repainted above and below the water line. The face plates of all the instruments at the helm were replaced with matching vintage-look gold rimmed gauges from Classic Instruments and a new teak helm console constructed to house them. The smaller windows on the house were all replaced, those on the sides with beveled glass. A 1940's era windshield wiper motor gouged out of the wood on the front windows was removed, teak was scarfed in and the saying inscribed above was restored. Storage hatches were added in the salon cabin sole, greatly increasing storage below decks. Her salon floor and walls were painted. Her rub and spray rails were varnished for the first time ever with eight coats of varnish.
Prior to that, the ongoing restoration plan has included regular haulouts, re-caulking, occasional plank replacement, and extensive exterior renovation.
In 1997, she was recaulked, refastened, her hull wooded and grooved, a few planks replaced, and her exterior completely repainted .
Faun also underwent extensive renovation in approximately 1991, courtesy of her prior owners. At that time, much of her interior was taken back all the way to the ribs, and her galley, accommodations, upholstery & furnishings were tastefully and sensitively redone in period-appropriate style that also provides thoroughly modern convenience and function. Attention was given to the ribs and hull at this time, and many of the ribs were sistered, as they had been cut indiscriminately by prior owner(s). Her electrical systems were completely redone at that time and the boat was completely rewired. Many mechanicals were also updated.
