I've been teaching in a variety of capacities for over 20 years. After receiving a BS in Elementary Education, I decided there was still so much to learn. I asked myself questions, such as how do I encourage my students to become leaders and self-starters? How do I empower my students to take initiative, take risks, and gain self-confidence?
Instead of relying heavily on curriculum, I explored child development. I researched the essential skills needed for students to become solid writers and confident readers. I sought to understand how students learned mathematical concepts. I delved into science and social studies in order to find valuable content for my students to explore. I asked myself what skills I wanted my students to gain. Initiative, networking, responsibility, persistence, creativity, problem-solving skills, and research skills were among these.
As a parent, I've homeschooled every grade from K-12, as well as Pre-K. As a home educator, I've had the freedom to spend copious amounts of time researching, experimenting with, and implementing 21st century learning practices. Because I've taught so many grade levels, I have a clear vision of the skills and knowledge needed to move forward from one step to the next. As a teacher, I meet each child at the level s/he is at and move on from there. This ensures that a solid foundation of knowledge and skills is built.
