I am often asked for a recommendation for a financial advisor. I recommend everyone consult with a financial advisor every few years to review your investments and preparations for retirement. You should have a financial advisor who teaches and explains things to you, someone who is working in your best interest.
The three big things things for you and your financial advisor to consider are:
Your Financial Goals - When do you want to retire? How much will you need in retirement? Are there other investing goals that you have such as college for your children?
Your Risk Tolerance Level - How comfortable are you with the ups and downs of the market? In any given year, the stock market could go down, but over a longer period of time, it all averages out pretty good. If you risk more, you have a chance for higher returns. But, with higher risk, you could lose more. With lower risk, you won't lose much, but you won't make much either. Ideally, your investments make enough to cover inflation and the effect of taxes on your investment growth.
Your Time Horizon - How much time do you have before you need the money in which you are investing or have invested? At what age do you plan to or hope to retire? As you get closer to retirement, you should consider carefully the level of risk in your investments. When you are young, you have many years to buffer the ups and downs of the market. When you are close to retirement, you really don't want to take as much chance in having a big down year. Sure, the stock market over time recovers and has a great average historically. But, will you have enough time for your investments to do that based on your time horizon?
With that said, here are several financial advisors that you could reach out to. Have a conversation with them. Find out what they do and if they are the right fit for what you are looking for.
