Trophy Series Race #2
Weather was great for the Race #2. We set up a 3 buoy course, one clockwise lap. The first leg was a beat to windward making the crossing of the start line a little tricky. Lila brushed the first buoy at the starting line, self reported and returned to re-round the buoy. A great example of Good Sportsmanship. The five finishing boats were very close to each other. Galactica endured a symphony of pilot errors and main sail rigging failure that knocked her out of the race practically before it started.
1st place: Blown Away [Kinder] Corrected Time: 1864.769
2nd place: Dragonfly [Stillwell] Corrected Time: 1970.694

The Commodore's Cup: Knockdown at MTLSA
From the July 2009 Scuttlebutt Liz Fleenor, editor, Race date: June 6, 2009
Photos Committee Boat Wild Goose dispatched a windy and gusty report from the cockpit on Saturday, June 6. Anchoring in 92 feet of water to mark the start line, the Commodore called out the names of the boats as the race began as a staggered start.
North winds were blowing at 17 mph gusting to 30 mph. It was our very own “Knockdown at Fastnet,” with some boats getting damaged or impaired prior to starting.
In the end, we logged these reports: Dei Gratia ripped her main sail; Desiree’ and Scotch N Water blew slugs all the way down the mast; Higher Porpoise wrapped a wench so badly it set them back 15 minutes and didn’t finish; and Dragonfly opted to fall out of the race after the first two legs to avoid a damaging beat back.
Razor thin close finishes highlighted the end of the race. Babe Too closed the gap and crossed the line just inches before Dei Gratia, even with her main ripped; and Sail LaVie and Vahalla nearly tied for third, with Sail LaVie heeling just enough over the line to snab a trophy. Jewel finished the line-up in fifth with a wet boom but still upright.
It’s these kinds of conditions that can test a sailor’s skill, as well as expose a weakness in hardware or rigging. We’re glad no one was hurt, no boats permanently damaged, and braggin’ rights were quenched by Commodore’s Punch!
First Series Race Results
by Fleet Captain and Commodore of Vice, Ed Wieberg, Race date: May 16, 2009

DragonFly was fourth with a corrected time was 5,339 sec. Aud a Sea finished fifth with a corrected time was 5,661sec. Scotch N Water did not finish. Time on time scoring was used to calculate the time. I would like to thank Tom and Sandy for being the committee boat and Karl for his help with the race.

2009 Trophy Races I, II, III
This is the traditional MTLSA racing series and is open to sailors who have paid the $15 racing fee along with their annual dues. This year we are planning three Trophy Races: May 16, September 26 and October 17. There will be a Business Meeting on the wharf at Black Jack Marina starting at about 10 or 11:00 followed by a Skipper's Meeting before each of these races. Racers must attend the Skipper's Meeting to sign in for the race and hear the briefing which includes course layout, instructions and the start time.
In addition to place winners for the Trophy Races, this year we are going to award a point champion at the end of the season based on the point system described above. If we have enough racers we also want to break the races down into two classes, with the class break down to be determined.
2009 Commodore's Cup
Details on the Commodore's Cup will be announced by Commodore Jeff Fleenor. This race is seperate from the Trophy Races and is open to any MTLSA sailor. No racing fee applies. This year's Commodore's Cup is scheduled for June 6.
Good Luck! May we have good fellowship, fun, and favorable winds during this 2009 racing season!
2009 Race Season - Planning Underway
by Ed Wieberg, Commodore of Vice, February 2009
Several guys got together after the January Planning Meeting to discuss the racing program. This is what they told the Scuttlebutt: Wednesday races will continue.
MTLSA needs to replace the "torpedo pump", and check over the line and anchors that we use for the much appreciate buoys donated by West Marine and that the Lawsons take care of for us. Thanks guys for handling that.
We plan on implementing a point champion based on attendance, placing the time over the racing season. We may hold division races and longer races up to Florida to encourage Indean Creek Marina participation.
