a) Nouns - people (Kanye West), places (Moose Jaw) and things: objects (kite), ideas (poverty), emotions (happiness)
2. Thesis Starters - Because, Although, If, Once, When, Even though, Since, Whenever
b) Common and Proper Nouns - Proper = a specific name/always capitalized; Common = a general name/only capitalized at the beginning of a sentence eg. restaurant - McDonald's/ holiday - Christmas/ dog - Chet the Jet
c) Concrete and Abstract Nouns - Concrete - can be sensed by at least one of the senses eg. pizza, a whistle/Abstract - cannot be sensed eg. communism, love, war
3. Thesis Starters - Even if, After, Before, While, As long as, As soon as, In order to, So that, Though, Unless
d. Subject Pronouns - I, you, he, she, it, one, we, you, they
e. Object Pronouns - me, you, her, him, it, us, you, them
f. Prepositions - show relationships, especially time and location/ part of a phrase ending with a pronoun or noun eg. phrase = preposition + descriptors + noun/pronoun eg. after the big red fire truck Preposition = after Noun = fire truck
4. Evil Words - avoid in formal writing - contractions, slang, get, abbreviations, I, we, you
5. Evil Words #2 - no huge (elephants only), no exclamation marks, no disclaimers or other people, use numbers rules, mention title and author, watch its, their, your
g) Polite Order for Pronouns - first: you; second: he, she, they, names; third: I, we
6. Open Ended Questions - need a detailed answer beyond yes/no; explore thoughts, feelings, and perspectives; use "what, why, how, if"
