Ivania Ortiz knew at the age of five years old that she wanted to become a teacher. Yet the road towards teaching would be filled with challenges, setbacks, and heartbreaks. However, after a seventeen-year journey, she is now in her second year as a teacher at Northridge Middle school. Ivania has called the West San Fernando Valley home since 1991. She is a first-generation migrant from the Mexican state of Zacatecas and the first in her family to graduate from high school and college.

Her first formal teaching experience came courtesy of Reseda High School, Multi-Lingual Teacher Career academy. This opportunity opened the door to a teaching career. When she graduated from High School, she was offered an early teaching contract. After High School, she continued to work and volunteer in her community while attending Pierce College. In 2006, through the support of her high school teacher and mentor, she was hired as a teacher assistant at Newcastle Elementary.

The following year, she transferred to Lemay Elementary and spend six years working with the staff and students of this community. In 2009, she graduated from Pierce College and transferred to California State University, Northridge. In 2013, she received her bachelor’s degree in History and Chicano/a Studies.

.In 2014, She began her career in special education. She was a long-term sub, who worked at Sutter Middle School, Stanley Mosk Elementary, Lull Special Education Center, and returned full circle to Reseda High School. In 2015, Ivania became part of the Leichman Career Prep and Transition Center Family. During her time at Leichman, she helped to successfully launch and expand vocational opportunities through the creation of Leo’s Bistro, The Lion’s Den Thrift Store, and The Recycleos Card Business. Ivania continues to work with Leichman staff to host monthly social opportunities for students.
LA County/ LAUSD Very Special Arts Festival
Through her experience, Ivania observed the various challenges in special education and she chose this field as her teaching focus. In 2016, Ivania returned to CSUN where she is completing her Special Education Teaching Credential Mild Moderate this fall 2020 semester. Over the course of her educational and professional experience, Ivania has had the opportunity of working in over twenty-five different class settings, spanning multiple grade levels. Ivania has presented her work as an Education activist at CSUN, UCLA, Otis College, and UCSD. Ivania is a community builder and advocate for equitable educational opportunities for all learners. She has served as the student representative for CSUNS Associated Students, as the student senator for the Michael D. Eisner College of Education, and as M.E.Ch.A de CSUN’s Mentorship Program Chair. When she is not working in the community she enjoys working in her garden with her husband & daughter and their dogs Luke and Cielo.
