Hi and welcome,
If you want to learn, I can teach you the world. I cannot force you to listen, I can only encourage you to want, I can only encourage you to try your best. Learning is not a passive process, it is a practice learned by doing. If you do not do, then learning will be challenging. Math may feel daunting at first, but with a little practice, something difficult and new can turn into something easy and maybe even fun. Things that we once knew are good, but things we can learn and grow from are even better. I want to teach you how to learn. I want to teach you to want to learn. In the end, money, belongings, or even your freedom can all be taken from you. The one thing that cannot be taken is your knowledge, so fill your head with the most valuable commodity, and learn. I want to help guide you along the way.
What will the math classroom look like?
The walls will be littered with colors and information to aid us on our journey and when you are at home I will be only a click away to help you along with my digital footprints. We will be very busy learning new stuff, practicing math problems, and checking over our work again and again and again. There will be quizzes and tests thrown in the mix too, but I promise to make it as painless as I can.
What will you need for class?
Notebook, folder, pen or pencil, MS Teams, a brain, respect, and to SHOW WORK. Oh and definitely not your cell phone or headphones...
Homework
Homework will be given mostly every class. Students always ask, "How do you study for math?" well homework is that studying.
What do you do if you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious?
Talk. Talk to me or talk to anyone. I am well aware of the difficulties and stresses of life and have suffered myself, I don't want you to feel this way, so talk and we can figure something out. You can talk to me in person, email me or message me on TEAMS.
What to do when Mr. Greene is absent?
More than likely I will be out from time to time. I have a small child who gets sick and I need to be home. If I am out, THERE WILL BE WORK. It will be on the front desk or on TEAMS. THERE WILL BE NO EXCUESES TO DOING NOTHING.
Will there be tutoring or extra help?
Yes, there are options.
Before and after school in room 2-17 is the Math Tutoring Center with help being offered from other students.
Wednesdays after school in the Media Center is the Homework Club with teachers assigned to almost every subject needed.
You can also see me! I will be around as much as I possibly can, a little heads up would be appreciated. My home life right now is pretty busy with a small child and I want to be around as much as possible to watch him grow.
If I have to run out of school, we could have a TEAMS chat later in the day or...
Watch my YouTube channel, Mr Greene Does Math, with video assistance on almost every topic we cover.
Don't worry about all that paper you use.
There are 180 days of school. Assuming each one of those days, each student receives and uses 2 sheets of paper from Mr. Greene and goes through 2 different 70-sheet notebooks by the end of the year, each student will use about 180 + 180 + 70 + 70 ≈ 500 sheets of paper. 500 sheets of paper are called a ream. Throughout the year I teach approximately 80 students with each using about 1 ream of paper each. An average sized tree produces between 15-20 reams of paper. That means for my class, an average of 4 to 5 trees will be needed to teach my classes. At the end of this year, I will give back 100 trees to be replanted in place of those 4-5 trees that we used. I started doing this at the completion of the 2017/2018 school year and have continued every year since thanks to the help of onetreeplanted.org.
