Life goes on

I still remember a few lines from my first tutorial with Hong Yee and would like to share with you guys. What he said was very true. MRCS is just a hurdle in your career. A speedbump to clear. Passing it does not make you a better surgeon, neither does failing mean that you are worse off than your colleagues. The exam is generally quite fair (especially if you compare it to part 3). You need to be aware not to gloat at those who failed; remain humble and keep up being keen to learn. After all, it really means nothing at all. Work goes on and life goes on too. If you sucked at ward work and had horrible operating skills prior to passing, you will continue being a shitty surgeon anyway. If you are already good in your daily work but failed, this is just a minor hurdle which may mean that you are not quite ready to be a Registrar yet. But just pick yourself up and try again. Fair warning about the limited attempts (a grand total of 4 before you are barred forever) you have at the examination though; you should really question your preparation commitment, examination techniques and books used if you failed it more than once.

Election by council

You need to be elected by the council to officially add the title behind your name. This occurs a few months (3 to 4) after your exams. After which you need to submit the scroll and membership certification to MOHH for the increase in your allowance. A recurring subscription fee needs to be paid to the respective colleges to allow you to continue the use the title of MRCS.
