ISS - Independent Seminars
Throughout the semester, each student will be responsible for a 20-30 minute seminar on a topic related to one of our units of study. Seminars should be interactive and include a formal written summary of all information and activities.
SCHEDULING - Students presenting at the start of the term will obviously need to begin work on their research in the first weeks of class, while those who go at the end of the term will have the benefit of seeing previous seminars and the feedback that these received. For this reason, the quality of the presentations at the end of the term is expected to be higher, especially in the clarity and organization of the presentation and in the overall terminology used throughout the presentation.
TOPICS - A list of recommended topics is available in this google doc, along with guiding questions for each topic and the rubric. Every year some students find new and interesting areas of study beyond these topics, so check with Mr. Clark if you have another idea you think is suitable.
CONSULTATIONS - In preparation for your presentation, it is suggested that you meet with your teacher as you begin your research. This will allow you to get feedback on topics to consider and possible resources you can use. It is expected that you will meet with your teacher no later than 2 weeks before your scheduled presentation date, although earlier consultations are certainly allowed and recommended. This consultation will be assessed using THIS CHECKLIST and will contribute to your ISS mark
Consultations may take place during class time if there is a suitable work period. As this is not always possible, however, you are expected to make arrangements to meet with the teacher either during lunch hours, second period or possibly after school.
Set your date with Mr. Clark ASAP.
Be sure to book your consultations when you book your presentation
