New Route: The Far NW

The Far NW: a coast to coast to coast

Covid Caveat

For the avoidance of any doubt, this is not offered as encouragement to break the Covid travel restrictions or, indeed, to abandon common sense. We ache to get back to the Highlands but won't be doing so until it is safe for for our hosts and for us.

It was a great consolation during lockdown to write this up. It is presented to be read, along with the maps, as a source of hope that things will improve.

Grading

We've graded the two middle days of the four H3, our highest grade. See P3 of your copy of "Mountain Biking Adventures", or under the "Look inside the book" tab here on the Website for our interpretation of that.

History

This route has been in gestation for a decade since we went from Glen Golly to Strath Dionard doing Route 1 and past Ben More and on into Assynt on Route 2. Shortly after we were inspired to include the Bealach Horne in a routes by reading Phil MacKane's day out "Glen Golly & the Bealach Horne" in his wonderful "Scotland Mountain Biking, Wild Trails Vol.2"

Sadly we have never done it all as laid out here, though we have ridden all the elements some way or another. It was our project for last September's trip but we neglected to notice our planned time was the same weekend as the Lairg Tup Fair and the last week of fishing in Naver so weren't able to get any accommodation! We planned to reschedule to this June, but that is already history.

The Route

To preserve reasonable quality on the maps the file sizes for each day were necessarily large, so they are presented individually. They are best viewed on a tablet or computer.

Introduction and Day 1

Day 4

We hope you enjoy them and that they bring some comfort in these times of armchair mountain biking.

Naturally, if they do, go to the Order tab to get much more of the same!
