Project taught by Dr. Eva Szillery at the Downtown Education Collaborative in Lewiston, ME.
The project was originally designed by: Lewis Simon
1) Make a mountain fold as shown below.
2) Fold top and bottom edges to center to create creases that separate
the square into four congruent rectangles.
3) Now create creases that separate the two center rectangles into
four thinner congruent rectangles.
4) Check to be sure you have the shape shown below.
5) Position the paper as shown below.
6) Fold the upper layer rectangles in half so that you have the shape
below.
7) Fold the rectangles on the top layer outward to create the stripes
as shown below.
7b) See side view below.
8) Turn the shape over, then fold the lower left corner up and the upper
right corner down to create a center rectangle.
9) The next step will be to create a diagonal fold that separates the
center rectangle into two congruent triangles. This fold must run from
the lower left corner to the upper right corner, as indicated by the
fingers in the picture.
10) See the fold below.
12) Unfold the corners, then refold them so that they line up as shown
below. Also notice the 90 degree angles that are formed with this
final fold.
13) Use 12 of these units to build the decoration box.
