Revolutions or Independence Movements?

This Crash Course World History video provides a good (and very quick) overview of the independence era in Latin America. As you watch, consider the following:

  • What is the difference between calling the push for independence across Latin America in the early nineteenth century "revolutions" versus "independence movements?" (John Green prefers the latter)
  • In what ways did European events act as a catalyst for the various independence movements throughout the region?
  • What details does John Green seem to gloss over or not explain satisfactorily? What aspects of his presentation are most effective, and why?

Once you've viewed the video and written down your answers to the questions above, also think about other terms and ideas that Green introduced in his brief introduction to Latin America's independence era. We will have opportunities to discuss those terms together as a class.
