Traditionally formatted math lessons often have students sitting and listening to their teacher explain how to solve a problem. "I Do, We Do, You Do." But how many students are actually doing the thinking? How many are waiting for a friend or teacher to do the thinking?
How can we move students from becoming passive learners to active thinkers in math lessons?Â
Kayla will share the results of her recent Master's Capstone research in mathematics instruction and discuss the need for teachers to facilitate critical thinking in students in comparison to the traditional math lesson format.
Kayla Becker
Kayla Becker serves as a 1st grade teacher at Cross of Christ in Coon Rapids, MN. She has experience teaching K-3 in both public and private schools. She is a 2018 graduate of Bethany Lutheran College and most recently received her Master's degree from North Central University in May 2024. There, she completed a Capstone project on best math instructional practices and completed several months of research into the topic. She has a passion for keeping up on best instructional practices and is excited to share her knowledge with other teachers!
