The best homework tasks exhibit four characteristics; they have a clear academic purpose, they are efficient in terms of time and student learning, they enhance a student’s sense of competence, and students feel they have some ownership of the task. Standards have also “raised the bar” about the complexity of learning and forced us to shift the focus of homework from working to learning. Rote practice is out-- practice of higher level skills is in. Preparing for tomorrow’s lesson is out--checking for understanding of today’s lesson is in. One size fits all is out--differentiated assignments targeted to specific standards are in. This presentation will share examples of quality homework tasks that meet the needs of today’s students.
