LASYLLABUS

LA Syllabus

1. Curriculum:

Language Arts:

Language Arts is demanding for most students this age. Students will be refining their writing skills, giving speeches, doing research, enhancing their knowledge of grammar, and improving their spelling and vocabulary. If your child tells you they do not have homework- email me because they may not be giving you accurate information.

2. Homework:

Homework will be given out regularly to enhance students’ education and to improve their skills. Students should check their planner daily and pace themselves. Do not save everything until the last night. Students should spend about 30 minutes a night on homework. A set time and place for homework is usually beneficial. Weeks will vary in the homework load depending on what we are working on. I accept late work but I will not keep asking for it. It is the student’s responsibility to turn it in.

3. Supplies:

Students must bring the following everyday.

    1. Planner- students must record homework and the due dates. Many of the assignments are due several days after they are given and students must plan their time.

    2. A three-ring binder with plenty of lined paper and subject dividers.

3. Two pencils and two ballpoint pens—blue or black only.

4. Charged device and headphones

5. Highlighters

6. Colored pencils or markers

7. Home supplies include a good dictionary, thesaurus, a ruler, scissors, pencil sharpener and a stapler.

4. Grading System:

Assignments will consist of essays, packets, reading projects, tests, group work, journals, class notes, etc. Each assignment is based on a point scale. Grades are determined by percentage with 90-100%= A, 80-89%= B,70-79%= C, 60-69%= D.

5. Communication:

A parent’s best method of keeping track of your student’s assignments is by checking his or her planner everyday. If your child is consistently earning A’s and B’s he/she may be ready for you to step back a bit. Otherwise, continue to offer support for your child in his/her schoolwork by keeping informed. You may call me at 760-631-4500 and leave a message. I will return your call but it may not be for a day or two. You may email me at rebekkakinder @ vistausd.org

6. Outside Reading:

Your child should be reading a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days a week outside of their assigned reading. Students should read novels, short stories, magazines, newspapers, and other informational material. Please encourage them to read, read, read. Students will be receiving a reading log and from their STAR Reading score, will be reading books to achieve AR points that will be added to their literature grade.
