Hi Parents,
During conferences last trimester a few of you were interested in book recommendations for your child(ren) to read outside of school. I have finally gotten around to composing a list of novels I think are diverse in themes & will interest my students outside of my ELA classroom. I am posting that list here. All things considered, this is a small list- it includes some classics from when I was in middle school, and some more modern releases. There is so much content out there, so I would encourage you to also peruse what is available to the kids. If you have any questions about specific titles, or have concerns about mature themes, please feel free to ask.
It's important for the students (especially those in 5th & 6th grade) to get into the habit of reading outside of school to boost comprehension & vocabulary. As you know, OLGC offers an honors track for ELA, and it is rigorous in its content. Fostering my students' imaginations & abilities to grasp complex concepts is my goal here, so hopefully we can create an environment where they'd rather pick up a book than a video game controller!
Happy reading! :)

Hi Parents!
Welcome to the Advent season- we made it! With only a few weeks left before Christmas break, the teachers have decided to proceed with Advent Angels for their homeroom classes. In previous years students have selected a secret "angel" to give little gifts to over the last couple weeks of school. To keep it Covid-friendly, I am asking that we skip the little gifts, and just spring for a $10-15 (no more than $20 please!) gift to be exchanged with their secret angels on Friday 12/18. I have asked that the students write their secret angels notes of kindness in lieu of little gifts until then. The secret Advent Angels were selected from a hat yesterday.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Please leave a note on the conference time you schedule with your preferred contact number. If you've already scheduled, please edit your appointment to include your phone number. If you are unable to do that, I will be sending emails requesting phone numbers by Friday (10/16).

A message from La Salle College High School to the 8th grade students & parents:
Good Afternoon,
We are hoping that your school opening has been a great success! At La Salle we are beginning our 5th week of classes and are so happy to see our students here on campus once again. Our Scholarship/Entrance Exam will be administered this Saturday, September 19th. We will be offering the test again on Saturday, September 26th. For students who are not available to take the test on either of these dates, we will work with them to schedule a mutually convenient date. We hope that your 8th grade boys are interested in La Salle and all we can offer them for their high school experience.
This Admissions Season has been by far our most unique due to covid-19 protocols and restrictions. In our effort to maintain a safe environment for our La Salle community and prospective families, we have replaced our Fall Open House with our newest YOUTUBE video called This Is La Salle. We premiered this video last Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. This Is La Salle link: https://www.lschs.org/admissions/this-is-lasalle
We look forward to helping your students in their search for the right high school for them. If you have any questions or if we can offer assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us. It would be an honor to help.
Thank you for your time and kind attention,
Patti Finlay, Admissions Officer

Hi Parents!
Well, here we are- we're back! It has been a long & arduous six months, but I am hopeful that the worst is behind us. As we begin the 2020-21 school year (in person!), I understand that the journey ahead is unknown. However, I will do everything in my power to reach your children the best way an ELA teacher knows how- with words. This school year might look different, but OLGC's foundation remains the same- we are here to foster faith, fellowship, and family. We are here to educate our children so that their futures will be brighter than today.
I ask that you please be patient with us as we dive headfirst into learning during COVID. We are adjusting to this "new normal" just as you are. I realize it may be difficult more times than it is not, but we are moving forward.
I will be sending out a formal teacher letter some time this week regarding my classes. I'm happy to be back, and I hope you are too!
And I can finally say it again- Go Birds!

Hi Parents:
We made it! The end of virtual learning is here and with Thursday (5/28) being our students' last day of regular classes, I wanted to touch base regarding a few things.
Final grades will be posted by Thursday, 5/28 if not earlier
I will not be accepting late work/missing assignments after 5pm today
ELA Summer assignments will be going home with your child(ren)'s belongings
It has been a crazy 10 weeks, so I want to extend my thanks to you for adjusting to these extenuating circumstances right alongside us teachers. I know it has not been easy, but considering the situation, I think we have been mostly successful at continuing our students' educations.
I want to thank you all for your kindness, and for welcoming me into the OLGC community this year. Hopefully the darkest days are behind us, and September 2020 will bring the light we've been waiting for at the end of the tunnel.
To my 8th grade parents:
I know this is not what you had in mind for your child's last year at OLGC, and I'm sorry for that. I can only hope their freshman years will not be plagued with this same turmoil. I'm sorry for what you missed out on, and for the memories you had hoped to make during this time.
To my 8th grade students:
I am so sorry this is how middle school is ending for you. It is unfair, complicated, and heartbreaking. It is normal to feel uncertain- sad, angry, alone. But if you consider this time an opportunity, you could really challenge yourselves to reflect on who you are and who you want to be. Write it down! You've all come a long way since August, and I'm proud of every single one of you, for so many different things. You have been robbed of an experience, no one can argue with that. But we can only move forward, so I wish you all nothing but the best for next year, and your high school careers. These may not be the memories you wanted to make, but they are the ones we've made. You have challenged me in the best way, and I am a better teacher for having had the opportunity to teach you. Thank you.
To the OLGC class of 2020, congratulations! And good luck 😎

Hello Parents:
With only 4 weeks (!!) left in the school year, I wanted to touch base regarding student performance in both my ELA and Religion classes. I know distance learning has been difficult and challenging for all of us, and I've sent plenty of personal emails to some of you regarding your individual child, but I wanted to draw your attention to a few things:
Option C is up to date with all current grades, including missing assignments
Every assignment posted to Google Classroom has a due date, and will alert me when work is submitted late
I have been incredibly lenient accepting late work, but now that we have been in a groove for over a month now with distance learning, I can no longer allow myself to give extensions or accept late work
Moving forward I expect my students to complete their work on time (I have spoken to each of my classes about this already). I will no longer be chasing students down for outstanding work. If you do not have access to Option C, please let me know. If your child is in danger of failing one of my classes due to missing work, I'd be happy to discuss what options they have moving forward for the remainder of the school year. Please email me with any questions you may have.
I hope you are staying safe and well!

Hello Parents:
Happy Easter Monday! I hope the last few days have been a much needed relaxing break. With the news that PA schools are keeping doors closed for the remainder of the school year, it is with a heavy heart that I am writing this. While this does not come as a shock at this point, we were still optimistic we'd get back in the classroom before June. Since we are not, I will continue to do my best to provide my students with virtual lessons as we embrace distance learning long-term.
In addition to lecture videos, I will be posting personal message videos to my classes throughout the week that I encourage you and your child(ren) to watch. It's a difficult and unprecedented time, and as an English teacher I'm full of words, so I'd like to share some of them with you. I will be addressing some of my thoughts concerning not returning to school before June, and hope you tune in.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. The same goes for my students- if you need someone to talk to (about anything!), I am always available to listen.
Stay healthy and safe!

A letter from Ms K
To my students and their parents:
As we make our way into week three of virtual learning, I wanted to reach out regarding a few things.
First: Parents, thank you for keeping open lines of communication, and for reaching out when you’ve had concerns regarding assignments, quizzes/tests, and the progress of your child(ren). We are hanging in there!
Second: Students, many of you are keeping up with the assignments I post each day, so if you are one of them, thank you. If you are not (and there are quite a few of you), let me remind you that virtual assignments are mandatory. While we are not in a structured classroom environment, this is not a vacation. We teachers are doing our best and working our hardest to provide you with material and assignments that will keep you engaged and learning until we meet again. It is expected that you make the same effort.
Third: Students, for those of you who haven’t completed assignments on time, completed them at all, or submitted tests/quizzes, I have been lenient these past two weeks. That ends now. I realize this is an unconventional situation we have found ourselves in, but now that we have adjusted (somewhat), it’s back to business. You know what my rules are- if it’s late, it’s a zero. **If you have any outstanding assignments/tests/quizzes from that last two weeks and do not wish to receive a zero, you may submit them late no later than Wednesday, April 1. After that, everything outstanding will be marked a zero.**
Parents, I hope that you can understand where I am coming from with this, and that I am trying to instill a sense of accountability/responsibility. I know some of you have reached out individually regarding this, so thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. I understand this has been just as difficult a situation for you to navigate as it has been for me, and for my students. Please continue to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Fourth: Students, I have been disappointed with the work I have been receiving. While some of you have not slacked off, it’s clear that some of you are not putting in the effort I know you are capable of giving me. Your tests and quizzes at this point are open book- utilize that. I can see who has viewed the video lectures I post, and a lot of you have not/do not. I post these videos to make your lives easier, so make your lives easier! I expect the same quality on assignments as I do in class, and will grade them as such. I encourage you not to simply turn in assignments without devoting any time or energy into completing them well just to turn them in. I can see effort clear as day, and right now it’s pretty dark. It is imperative that you attend to your lessons while we are away from school because eventually we will be back, and if your grades fall behind it will be a difficult thing to fix. I am doing my best to be gracious and understanding, so please know that I am always available to listen if you are struggling with anything- school-related or otherwise.
Parents: While I encourage student accountability, it may be advisable to confirm your child(ren) are completing their work each day. I realize you are busy, so if you do not think this is necessary then by all means don’t make more work yourself! I just do not want there to be any surprises for you regarding grades.
That is everything I wanted to discuss at this time. Please feel free to reach out to me with questions/concerns. Option C is updated, and almost every assignment has been returned on Google Classroom. Students, you have access to what assignments I am missing from you, so there should be no confusion.
Moving forward I am hopeful that we will take this uncertain time and turn it into an opportunity to learn in a way we never anticipated having to do. I am here for you.
Parents, last thing- I encourage you to share this letter with your child(ren) in case they do not read it of their own volition.
Thank you for bearing with me- I know it was long!
Thank you,
Miss K

Hi Parents!
As we enter into the Lenten season this week I will be reminding each of my students why their education is important- especially a Catholic one. With second trimester coming to a close (in two weeks!), it is imperative that we all- students, parents, teachers- stay focused on our common goal: education. I've witnessed students becoming exasperated over receiving poor grades, but I am constantly reminding them that we, their teachers at OLGC, are holding them to a higher standard- one that they are more than capable of achieving.
It is a goal of mine to hold my students accountable for their behavior and performance, to not just teach them academically, but to teach them responsibility. What can they do better for next time? How can they improve their performance? Why not make the effort? I've heard enough "I don't care"-s to last me until this time next year! It's time to care again, or in some cases, to start.
Parents, I ask that you encourage your children to reach their maximum potentials- because they have so much more to give. I know how much each and every one of you values your child's education, and we teachers are constantly striving to create new ways to invigorate our students to learn- to be innovative, and motivating, and INTERESTING! Parents, you and I have been working so hard to provide your children/my students opportunities for a successful future in education- it's time they meet us halfway. I hope you will help me to get them there.
Spring is in the air! 13 Mondays til MDW!

Hi Parents!
As we get ready to enter Catholic Schools Week, OLGC has been planning activities that promote unity and giving. While we are constantly seeking ways to give back to our Catholic School community, it is also a blessing to expand our good fortune to people around us, as Jesus would.
I wanted to bring attention to one of those opportunities: on Sunday, January 26, Outback Steakhouse is donating all of its proceeds (worldwide!) to aid the Australian bush fire relief. I've attached the link below for anyone who might be interested in having a family dinner at Outback this weekend! PLEASE NOTE: this is in no way related to OLGC (not a fundraiser, not a school event, etc.). I simply wanted to promote what I believe is a wonderful thing being done for the people of Australia as they continue to combat the bush fires.
Link (you will need to present the webpage to your server): https://www.outback.com/offers/bushfires
Please keep Australia in your prayers. Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,
The PIE committee is requesting that each school family help support the OLGC Spring Fling Auction event with a small donation.
All school families are asked to donate either a $30 basket (share your idea via the form below) or send $30 in to school for PIE to secure basket items on your behalf. Please note: families who donate a larger item for the Auction are not obligated to send in the $30 or $30 basket.
Basket Donation Form: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XFV2p5tsvSlFGF4Ng8axhIH94dYaRBSt
The Auction is the biggest parent fundraiser for our school - we can only make it a success with participation from all families! Thank you!
Please send in your completed basket donation form or $30 cash or check (payable to OLGC P.I.E.) by NEXT FRIDAY, 1/24. The committee needs time to plan and secure items for bid.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the Spring Fling Auction in March!

Hello Parents!
Welcome to 2020! I hope you all enjoyed the long break, and that the kids were able to rest and recharge. While we all- students, parents, teachers- get settled back into our academic routines, it is important to note second trimester is well under way. I am jumping right back into learning with all of my classes, and encourage you to keep your children motivated to study as necessary and complete their homework/assignments ON TIME!
To my 8th grade parents: The last two trimesters of middle school are here! With high school just around the corner, it's important to me that my students stay focused. I have a lot of interactive projects planned for the next few months, and it is my hope that this level of hands-on learning prepares them for what's ahead. While I haven't known your children long, I have enjoyed teaching every one of them, and am looking forward to their successes in the future.
A fun thing that helps me get through the winter months is counting down the Mondays until Memorial Day Weekend. So here we go- 19 Mondays til MDW!

Hello Parents!
We've made it to Thanksgiving and the end of the first trimester! I hope you all enjoy the extended Thanksgiving break, and your children come back recharged moving into December. Coming back next Tuesday, we only have three instructional weeks before the Christmas break, and they will be BUSY! As second trimester starts, it is imperative that we all- students, parents, teachers- remain vigilant in putting school and learning first.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and enjoy the much needed rest!

Hi Parents of my 7th Grade Homeroom!
In the spirit of giving, OLGC is participating in TWO fundraisers during the month of November. The Turkey Feathers Drive and the Coin Challenge.
Students may purchase a "feather" for $1, that will go towards the purchase of the turkey for the Thanksgiving baskets we are providing for local families in need. The homeroom with the highest average $ raised per student in the class wins a pizza party! Deadline: Friday, 11/15
For the Coin Challenge, students are encouraged to bring in loose change that will be donated to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. OLGC has partnered with Scholastic for this challenge, and they will match whatever proceeds we raise, and donate that amount in books to schools affected by the recent hurricanes. Deadline: Thursday, 11/7
It is my belief that in giving we receive, so thank you in advance for participating and donating to these wonderful causes!

Since there are only 7 students in 7th Grade, I'd appreciate the extra help to get us to our goal!
The donations are due on Friday, 11/15. Thanks!

Hello, Parents!
Welcome to a brand new school year! As a new teacher this year, I spent the first week of school meeting your children, learning their names, learning their goals, and collaborating with them on ideas for how we can make the 2019-2020 school year a successful one. I only ask that you please be patient while I set up my Google Classroom (as well as this website!).
I mentioned the following notes to all my students in each of my four classes this past week, but I wanted to post them here as well since I did not send any announcements home on paper. Please find the list of required class materials for my students below. Please also note the classroom policies that will be in effect for the entire duration of the school year.
