Nearer to home the N.I./Ulster Juvenile indoor championships were held in the Meadowbank Arena and Jordanstown.  At Meadowbank the club had 12 athletes competing in various events, a record number for this competitin. The outstanding athlete for the club was 11 year old Sebastian Hastings who had a tremendous competition in the u12 High Jump which he won with a jump of 1m16cm and thus qualified for the Irish championships in Athlone in March. At these championships Aidan McCluskey also under 12 had a good run in the 600m where he won the silver medal in 1min 53.95secs. In the boys under 19 years Sammy Rosborough in his last year as a juvenile won the silver in the 200m in 26.60secs also qualyifying for the Irish championships.A number of other athletes had good early season performances and if prepared to knuckle down to some serious training will get the results later in the year.

At round two of the these championships which were held in Jordanstown the club again had a record number of athletes competing this time fifteen and won 2 gold, 2 silver and a bronze medal. A total over the two venues of 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze medal a record haul in recent years. Aiden McCluskey boys under 12 years won a brilliant gold medal in 9.01secs over 60. In the boys under 15 years Martin Mellon ran a great race to lift the silver medal in 7.81secs. Ryan McCloy was fourth in this race with a personal best of 8.29secs. Juvenile all-Ireland Cross Championships, Adamstown, Co Wexford, Sunday 19 December 2012

Aidan McCluskey represented his club and province in his first ever all-Ireland event with great distinction. Showing great courage to overcome pre-race nerves, he ran a fine race to finish in a time that was joint 20th in a field of 147 athletes, recording 5 min 38 seconds on the 1500m course. This was excellent experience for a promising Mid-Ulster AC athlete!

Silver for Aidan McCluskey in U11 NI & Ulster Cross Country Championships, Killybegs, Co. Donegal - 11 November 2012

Congratulations to Aidan McCluskey who ran a courageous 1200m race to win silver in the U11 NI & Ulster XC Championships on 11 Nov 12. In typical style, Aidan forced the pace from an early stage in a field of some 75 athletes. Competing against the outstanding Black twins from Cranford AC, Aidan had a fight in his hands. When the composed and graceful Stephen Black (184) struck for home with about 200m to go, Aidan had it all to do. As the gap opened, trouble loomed behind as well as the pack seemed to close on Aidan, led by the determined Conor Black (185). However, Aidan had a title to defend and dug deep once again to kick for home with less than 100m to go. Despite a strong finish, he was unable to reach Stephen Black but held off brother Conor for the silver medal. These three talented young athletes now go on the represent Ulster at the All-Ireland Championships in Co. Wexford on Sunday 9 December 12. We wish them all well!

Antrim IAAF Cross Country, Greenmount, Antrim: 21 January 2012

Congratulations to Aidan McCluskey on his silver medal at the Primary School Boys 1100m race. Running in a large field of well over 50 athletes, Aidan ran a controlled and composed race, tucking in behind the leaders as the pack thinned out. He struck for home with about 200m to go. Despite a fast finish, he was beaten to the tape by just 1 second. A creditable performance from an athlete who still has another year left to compete in this event.

With under 100m to go Aidan kicked again to try to close the gap, using everything his arms and legs would give him. Showing immense determination, he forced his way over the finish line to pick up the coveted title of U10 NI & Ulster Cross Country Champion!

Padraig Martin a former 7m long jumper and a former N.I. International in his first masters championship won an excellent silver medal in the 35/39year category in the long jump with 5m 63cm

Mickey Linden better known in the football world and competing for the first time for the club and in his first Irish Masters Championships won a great gold and bronze medal. Maggi Donnelly continues to amaze. Due to the illness of her coach Maggi has been unable to do any technical training for over a year.  However she has managed to keep up her weight training which just goes to show the importance of strength and conditioning in the throwing events.

Irish Juvenile Championships - Tullamore, Co. Offaly

Congratulations to Conor McCluskey who set a new PB of 1 min 48.3 seconds in the 600m for u13 boys at Tullamore on Sunday 10th July. Conor took 0.65 seconds off his bronze medal-winning time in the NI & Ulster Championships in May. Whilst not in the medals, Conor had an excellent race which was run at a blistering pace by a top class field from all over Ireland.

Irish Juvenile Championships - Tullamore, Co. Offlay

The club have one representative this weekend in these championships, Connor McCluskey who will be competing in the 600m for boys under 13 years. We wish him success in his quest for an Irish medal.

Mid Ulster Athletes compete in Belgium and Germany

Adam McMullen competing in Oordegen, Belguim on Saturday 2nd July won the long jump with a fantastic new P.B. and European under 23 Championship qualifying distance of 7m 61cm. This exceeds his previous best by 0.22cm and puts him at the head of the Irish rankings. It also puts him number one at u23 in the UK rankings. Adam also had a fantastic 200m run where he recorded another P.B. of 21.88secs beating his previous best by 0.23secs. Adam, who is 21 tomorrow has had a tremendous middle season surge. The club wish him a happy birthday. This long jump performance has resulted in Adam being selected by Ireland to compete in the European u23 Championships in Ostrava in the Czech Republic from 14/17 July.

Andrew Doyle competing in Mannheim, Germany had a disappointing competition by his standards where he threw the 6kg hammer out to 61m 88cm. Not the sort of performance he was hoping for.  However he does tell me the sectors where marked out in 10m segements and after each throw you had to collect your own hammer. Two of his throws landed just outside the sector and he reckons he was pretty close to 68m on both throws. He competes again in Dublin tonight(Wednesday). The team for Estonia will be finally picked after the 10th.

Fantastic Week-end of Championship Medal Winning Performances

At the N.I. Age group Championships held at Antrim, the javelin thrower Jordan Greer representing his school Cookstown High School won the bronze medal in his age group and qualified for the Irish Championship in July.

At the Schools Inter Pros held in Templemore last Saturday Jacquline Burns, representing her school Cookstown High School won her javelin event.

The following day at the same venue in the Irish under 20 Championships Andrew Doyle won gold in the shot with 15m 36cm, he won the silver medal in the discus with a throw of 38m 85cm. However in the hammer he had a disastrous day by his standard when he threw 62m 64cm his worst competition of the season to finish fourth, however he does have a chance to redeem himself when he jets off to Mannheim in Germany this weekend with the Irish Team. We wish him luck.

In the under 23 Championships at the same venue Matthew Doyle was not going to let his younger brother have it all his way and had a great gold medal winning performance in the shot with 11m 22cm. He also picked up the silver medal in the discus with a throw of 32m 64cm. The club are delighted for Matthew who trains hard and puts his whole heart into his events.

In the under 23 long jump Adam McMullen had a fantastic performance when he jumped out to 7m 73cm to win the gold medal.  This jump was some 30cm beyond his personal best and although wind assisted he now knows he can jump out to these sort of distances. The club look forward to his further progress. Adam competes for N.I. in Belguim next week. The club's good wishes go with him.

Last weekend was not just all about the young and emerging athletes. At the U.K. Master Track and Field Championships at Alexander Stadium Birmingham, the club had one representative, Des Ryan and what a representative, Des competing in the 70 plus age group won the 100m in 14.09sec, the 200m in 29.62secs and the 400m in 69.68secs all in one day. Ask yourself how many young supposedly athletes could run these times and all in one day. I would suggest you would have quite a number struggling. Well done Des.

Last Tuesday the club held the first of three Multi Event competitions for the Development Group and Senior Athletes. The second event will be on Tuesday 26 July at 8pm with a further competition in August. The accumulated scores will convert to prizes which will be presented at the Summer Barbecue at the end of August. The three events each month consist of a run, a jump and a throw in the athletes own age group.

The club competes in the second round of the Irish Senior League Division 1 in Santry, Dublin on Sunday 17 July.  The first round in Sligo was almost a wash out with freezing weather and constant rain. Here's hoping summer comes to Dublin soon. We still need middle distance athletes to augment our team. If anyone fancies testing themselves on the track they would be made very welcome.  Training on Tuesday nights at 8:00pm and Thursday nights at 7:00pm.

Star track is well advanced and will be held this year from Monday 1st to Friday 5th August from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the Meadowbank Track. In our search for a sprint star we are offering a £60 voucher to the athlete who can equal or beat the winning 60m time of Michael Devlin at the U.K. Star Track Final in Gateshead in 2000. His time was 7.75seconds.  Are you up to the challenge?  In addition we will be looking for a potential Multi Event athlete covering a run, a jump and a throw. Look at the London 2012 Olympics and see the Multi Event star, Jessica Ennis compete over seven events. Are you up for this challenge?

Night of Records and Personal Best Performances

At the 3rd round of the Northern Ireland Young Athlete's League held in Magherafelt on Wednesday 15 June Andrew Doyle threw the 6kg hammer out to a new Northern Ireland record of 66m 25cm smashing his own record by 2m which he set last saturday in Antrim.  This performance also exceeded the qualifying standard to make the Irish team for the European Games in Estonia later this summer. His brother Matthew not to be outdone set new personal figures with the Senior discus of 36m 35cm which puts him number three in Ireland at under 23 level. He also threw the senior hammer to a new P.B. of 31m 79cm.  Jordan Greer continues to improve with every outing and in the under fifteen javelin he threw the 700gm implement out to new P.B. of 44m 35cm. Kyle Colgan in his first race over 400m at under 15 level ran an excellent time of 58secs. Another young athlete to excel last night was Conor McCluskey in the under 13 boys 800m where he led from gun to tape to decimate the field and record a new P.B. of 2mins 32secs. Since returning from his year out, Ciarnan Burns' regular and consistent training has proven productive as seen in his latest event where he threw an outstanding 34m 36 cm with the 3KG hammer in the under 13 event

Club enters Irish Senior Division 1 Track and Field League

A senior section has been steadily building within the club, this has resulted in the decision to enter the Irish Senoir Division 1 Track and Field League. The league kicks off this month with the first round in Sligo on Sunday 12 June. Team meets at 7am at the usual collection point. For the purposes of the league a senior is anyone over the age of sixteen years.  The club have quite a formidable group of Sprinters, Jumpers and Throwers but can always do with more. To strengthen our team we are on the hunt for middle distance runners. So if anyone would like to have a go racing on the track over 800m.1500m, 3k, 3k steeplechase, 5k or indeed fancies themselves as a speed walker on the track over 3 and 5k then please make themselves known to any of the coaches where they will be made most welcome.
