Quand, au XVIe siècle, des esclaves noirs d’Angola et du Congo furent vendus au Brésil par des esclavagistes portugais, il amenèrent avec eux leurs danses, jugées indécentes par leurs maîtres car elles mettaient en contact les nombrils...

À la fin du XIXe siècle, quand l’esclavage fut aboli, ces danses se mélangèrent à la habanéra et à la polka. Le nom de la danse qui en résulta, la samba, dérive d’ailleurs des mots « zambo » et « semba » qui désignaient les enfants d’un homme noir et d’une brésilienne.

Les sonorités de la samba sont joyeuses et invitent à la fête. Les corps se balancent sur des pas chassés pendant que les bassins se déhanchent avec grâce.

When, in the 16th century, black slaves from Angola and the Congo were sold in Brazil by Portuguese slavers, they brought with them their dances, deemed indecent by their masters because they put the navels in contact...

At the end of the 19th century, when slavery was abolished, these dances were mixed with the habanera and the polka. The name of the resulting dance, the samba, derives from the words "zambo" and "semba" which designated the children of a black man and a Brazilian woman.

The sounds of the samba are joyful and invite you to party. The bodies sway on sidesteps while the hips sway gracefully.
