Possible Michigan Native Orchids

These orchids have not beed reported to be growing in Michigan, but conditions exist that there is a possibility that they have gone undiscovered. For an orchid enthusiast, finding one of these species within Michigan would be condsidered a lifetime achievement.

Cypripedium passerinum - Sparrow-egg Lady Slipper:

This species has been found in Ontario along the eastern and northern shores of Lake Superior.

Listera australis - Southern Twayblade:

Reported to be found in Ontario along Lake Huron and eastward. Leaves very similar to Listera cordata, Heart-leaf Twayblade.

Listera borealis - Northern Twayblade:

Reported be be growing near the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario.

Malaxis paludosa - Bog Adder's-mouth:

Has been reported in Minnesota.

Platanthera grandiflorum - Large Purple Fringed Orchid:

Other photographer's images of what looks to be charactistics of a Platanthera grandiflorum that was found in Michigan have been reported, but not reflected in various field guides. I think back to all the Platanthera pyscodes I've stumbled across and now wonder if any of them could of been a Platanthera grandiflorum. I know in the future, I'll be checking them more closely instead of just assuming.
