Its beauty is uncomparable and unique, offering lovely views and perspectives from north to south. On a clear day, the mountains' reflection is stamped onto the mirror-silver lake.
From the end of the 19th century lake Maggiore become a favourite summer destination for the European royalty and fashionable society: Queen Victoria, Queen Margherita and King Umberto I, the king of Wurtenberg, the Queen of Romania.....not to forget Winston Churchill, Gustave Flaubert, Stendhal, Charles Dickens and many others.
Artists, poets and musicians were inspired by the beauty and the lovely landscapes of lake Maggiore. The same beauty inspired the aristocracy and the wealthy industrialists who decided to build villas and palaces in this gorgeous area. From south to north, the beautiful villas and gardens can be admired especially from the water, one after the others and all different.
Many of them were built in the second part of the 19th century, but older villas and palaces can also be found.
Industrialists, wealthy families, engineers were competing to have the most impressive villa built, sometimes in the shape of a castle, sometimes in the art- nouveau style.
