Digital media is a subset of electronic media, which is a subset of electric media, which is a subset of media technologies, which is a subset of technology in general. This is the point our work in Media Studies has led us to. And prior to this we followed a path that described Media Studies as a subset of the Liberal and Fine Arts, within Higher Education, within Ways of Knowing or WOKS of life. Our skills-based approach will continue while our emphasis shifts from the intellectual WOK to the aesthetic WOK. Within this switch, the DNA of the DMA course branches in two different directions. One branch leads to working on general literacy skills with regard to writing (in digital text. image, audio, and video). All of the assignments will ask you to explore the potential of digital media to yield interesting results via engagement with the creative process. The other branch leads to building additional knowledge in reading media --by examining trends related to new-media art as well as hybrid forms of traditional art augmented by digital media. Everyone will be required to read the pieces on new-media art. We will have separate readings, though, for Dance, Design and Production, Drama, Film, and Music students, when it comes to learning about hybrid forms. I have created two tables below that include various software tools for branch #1 and various readings for branch #2. . The software tool selection is based on price (free is best) and availability within the DMA studio. You are allowed to use other software to complete the projects we will engage in, if you prefer. Again the readings are selected for general as well as area-specific relevance.SOFTWARE TOOLS
