It's a great way to relax & find things that have been lost over time.
It's fun for starters, and a great way to spend time outside in the fresh air around nature.
Metal Detecting, it's a hit or miss adventure for some, some can stick to it and do very well, and others don't get to grips with it and end up putting that $200.00 plus metal detector in the garage to collect dust, or some just sell it for less than half of what they paid for it.
For those of us that have taken to this hobby / sport, we are the hardcore detectorists, we strive to find things in the ground, be it modern coins, old coins, relics, silver or gold, heck, some of us even hope to find a hidden treasure trove thats been in the ground for 100 years or more.
Metal Detecting seems to have a negative impact on some people, they look at us and wonder what the heck we are doing waving a stick around with a large disc on the end of it. Not only that, we have a number of tools too, a digging tool that looks like a large knife, this can look menacing to some. Others carry a large object that looks like a large frying pan basket, you will see these being carried by those that are metal detecting on beaches.
Now, before I go any further, there are some metal detectorists that seem to make the rest of us look bad and that we go around digging up the countryside without a care in the world and not filling in the holes that we have dug and leaving the area in a mess, this in turn causes local people to get up in arms and complain to the local town hall and the police and whoever else that they can think of. The upshot of this is that the bad egg / black sheep among us has put metal detecting as a hobby in danger of becoming a bad thing, when this happens, area's get put off limits, and towns make laws / rules so that we can not metal detect in them. Yes, I'm talking about those that leave holes in the ground, and trash on the ground, it does not look too good to walk around the corner and see that someone has hit the local park with a backhoe, thats what it looks like. Detectorists like these give us a bad name, but we are not all like that as we value the land that we detect on, it's our recreation when we are not at work, some like baseball or golf and so on.
