Narkotikaodlare största hotet mot regnskogen

STOCKHOLM. Narkotikaodlingarna i Colombia i Sydamerika har blivit så omfattande att de nu utgör det största hotet mot landets natur - som är en av de artrikaste i världen. En ny studie visar att hälften av skogsskövlingen i landet orsakas av odlingarna. Detta står i kontrast till situationen i de flesta andra tropiska länder. Där huggs skogarna ner för sitt timmer eller för att bereda plats för boskap eller vanliga grödor. Men i Colombia har odlingarna av kokabuskar och opieplantor blivit allt mer dominerande de senaste 15 åren på grund av det pågående inbördeskriget i landet. Såväl vänstergerillan som högermilisen finansierar sin verksamhet med narkotikahandel. Biologen Maria Alvarez, verksam vid Columbia University i New York i USA, har granskat odlingarnas utbredning, den totala avskogningen i landet, och hur detta påverkat utbredningen av vissa fågelarter. Hennes rön, som publiceras i det senaste numret av den vetenskapliga tidskriften Conservation Biology, avslöjar tydligt att narkotikaodlarna utgör ett dödligt hot mot den biologiska mångfalden. I dagsläget svarar odlarna för cirka 50 procent av den totala avskogningen i landet. Värst är läget i bergsskogarna i Anderna, men även i Amazonas faller träden i allt snabbare takt för att bereda plats för narkotikaplantorna. Om Colombia vore ett normalt land från ett biologiskt perspektiv skulle detta kanske inte väcka alltför stor oro. Men Colombia är inget normalt land. Här finns cirka 1 700 fågelarter - den högsta siffran på jorden - och räknas alla grupper av organismer in, är sannolikt bara Brasilien och Indonesien artrikare. Det som händer med Colombias natur är med andra ord av globalt intresse. Situationen förvärras tragiskt nog av de militära insatserna mot narkotikaodlingen. Odlarna flyttar oftast på sig när de förföljs eller när deras plantor giftbesprutas från luften, och anlägger nya odlingar någon annanstans, ofta i otillgängliga och jungfruliga områden, vilket givetvis innebär att skövlingen sprids ytterligare.
Cultivators of narcotics main threat against rain forest

The farming of narcotics in Colombia in South America has become so extensive that the cultivation now are the greatest threat against the nature of the country - which is one the the most species diverse in the world. A new study shoes that half of the deforestaion in the country are caused by this cultivation. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in most other tropical nations, where forests are cut for timber or cleared to leave space cattle or regular crops. But in Colombia the cultivation of coca-bushes and opium-plants has become more and more dominating the last 15 years due to the ongoing civil war in the country. The leftist guerilla as well as the right-wing milita are financing their activities with drug trade. The biologist Maria Alvarez, active at Columbia University in New York, USA, has examined the extent of the farming, the total deforestation in the nation and how this has affected the "localities" (can't find the exact word: spread and whereabouts of a species) of certain bird species. Her findings, which are published in the latest issue of the scientific journal Conservation Biology, are clearly demonstrating that the drug-farmers are a lethal threat to the biological diversity. Today these farmers are responsible for about 50 per cent of the total deforestation in the country. The situation is worst in the mountain forests in the Andes, but also in the Amazonas the trees are cut at a increasingly fast rate to make room for the drug plants. If Colombia was a normal country from a biological perspective this might not cause all too much worry. But Colombia is not a normal country. 1700 bird species exist here - the highest number on Earth - and counting all groups of organisms, it is probably only Brazil and Indonesia that are more species-diverse. What is happening to Colombia's nature is in other words of global interest. The situation is tragically enough worsened by the military attacks on coca-growing. The farmers often move when they are persecuted or when their crop is air-sprayed with pesticides. They start new plantations elsewhere, often in hard to reach and virginal areas, which of course means that the destruction is spread even more.
