Day 3. Friday, 27 March
Field trip to Glen Canyon.
We will depart Flagstaff and drive 2 hrs to Lees Ferry, AZ where we will all board 1 of 3 vessels to take us a short distance upstream on the Colorado River towards Glen Canyon Dam.
Two multibeam systems will be operated and demonstrated simultaneously. One boat will be surveying using a Reson 7215 multibeam system, with Hydrins inertial navigation system, and Trimble robotic total station tracking. Daniel Buscombe and Matt Kaplinski will be carrying out this demonstration/training. Another boat will be surveying using a Norbit integrated multibeam system, coupled with a POS-MV navigation system. Mike Mutschler from Seahorse Geomatics will be carrying out this demonstration/training. We will provide demonstrations of system components, data acquisition, and talk about some of the challenges associated with hydrographic surveying in a large canyon river. Participants will take it in turns to board both vessels.
Packed lunches will be provided. Glen Canyon in late March the weather could be chilly/rainy (but unlikely to be very cold) or warm/sunny (but unlikely to be very hot) so please be prepared for those eventualities. Glen Canyon can be chilly on the water even on a warm day.
More details will be posted as they become available. Please contact the event organizers (dbuscombe@usgs.gov) if you haven't done so already to secure your place on this trip.
