Research

My disciplinary focus is the history of philosophy, particularly within classical India. Methodologically, I would place myself in the school of thought pioneered by thinkers like B. K. Matilal and Gregory Vlastos, who sought fruitful engagement between contemporary and classical traditions.

My most recent book is a a study of Vātsyāyana’s commentary on the Nyāya-sūtra, part of a new series entitled Oxford Guides to Philosophy.

I've also published a small volume on the philosophy of religion in classical "Hindu" thought (Hackett Publishing, 2021), co-authored with Stephen Phillips and Nirmalya Guya.

And a select, annotated translation of the Nyāya-sūtra with early commentaries  (Hackett Publishing, 2017), co-authored with Stephen Phillips.

And an edited collection,  Free Will, Agency, and Selfhood in Indian Philosophy (Oxford University Press 2014), co-edited with Edwin Bryant.

I have articles in journals that include Philosophy East and West, History of Philosophy Quarterly, and Asian Philosophy, and in collections that include Skepticism From Antiquity to the Present, The Routledge Companion to Theism, and The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy.

Please see my philpapers page for more information about my research. Digital copies of my recent work, along with that of other members of the BSU Department of Philosophy, are available at the BSU Virtual Commons site.

(I've made a note of errata for our  Nyāya volume here, to be corrected in future printings. )
