I am a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in CO and WY specializing in therapy with others in the helping professionals who are struggling with burnout, stress, grief, loss, trauma, and other mental health and relational issues. I am trained in all forms of Couples & Family Therapy modalities with a focus on Internal Family Systems Therapy, attachment theory, Emotioanl Focused Therapy, and EMDR.
Grief and loss therapy is one of my passions. I love helping people manage the intensity of thoughts, feelings, and experiences of grief, whether the loss is death-related (i.e., death of a parent) or non-death related (i.e., divorce or job loss). I have extensive experience treating all types of grief and loss across the lifespan.
Trauma is another specialty of mine, and I treat trauma using all of my specialized training such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Mindfulness. I have worked with individuals, couples, families and first responders who have survived fires and other disasters. I also specialize in working with clients with medical trauma.
I have expertise in diagnosing and treating adult ADHD, especially in the couples and family context.
I am an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and I enjoy working with new therapists who have graduated from their MFT programs and are working in agencies or private practice to get clinical experience to get their license. Please see the Supervision tab under Services for more information.
I am an AAMFT Approved Supervisor Mentor for licensed professionals working to get their credentials to become AAMFT Approved Supervisors.
Dr. Jenn Matheson, PhD, LMFT, Approved Supervisor
My education is varied and highly specialized. I am a first generation college graduate who finished a bachelor's degree in Psychology at North Carolina State University in 1991. I completed my first master's degree in Sociology: Sex and Gender in 1999 from George Mason University. I earned a second master's degree and a Ph.D. in Marriage & Family Therapy from Virginia Tech. My clinical internships were at Inova Kellar Center, the Family Therapy Center in Blacksburg, VA, Vanguard Services Unlimited (now Phoenix House), and Virginia Tech's Center for Family Services.
I am a former tenured associate professor in Human Development & Family Studies with a specialty in Marriage & Family Therapy where I trained graduate students to become outstanding therapists. Many of those former students are now practicing across the US, or they went on to get their PhDs and are now working in academic settings. I decided after many exciting experiences as a professor to follow my former students into private practice so I could focus all of my time and energy on helping individuals, couples, and families with grief, loss, and trauma.
I am a Past President of the Colorado Association of Marriage & Family Therapy. I then become the Chair of the Council of Division Presidents for the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy, followed by being appointed as a Director on their Board of Directors. This matters to you and your family because it shows I am committed to ongoing professional development and advancing my profession. I strive for excellence in my work, and you deserve that in a therapist.
For many years, I was a Senior Coordinator for Research and The Advancement of Psychotherapy for the Foundation for Self Leadership, advancing the Internal Family Systems model of therapy. I continue to support the mission of The Foundation for Self Leadership as the Annotation Project Coordinator.
I am an award-winning university instructor and NIDA research grantee with dozens of publications and presentations on topics such as substance abuse treatment, balancing work and personal lives, and grief and loss.
