Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunities

Positions

The Hussain Shuler lab at The Johns Hopkins University Department of Neuroscience is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral research fellow.

The lab seeks to understand the learning algorithms and representational architectures the brain uses to produce adaptive behavior. In particular, we study the domain of time-investment problems, where time must be spent to gain future reward. We use quantitative behavioral tasks, in vivo electrophysiology (Neuropixels 2.0), imaging of neuromodulator release, and causal manipulations to test and develop better normative models and understand their neural instantiations. We also address these questions in models of Alzheimer’s disease to understand how neurodegeneration, especially of the cholinergic system, impairs decision-making.

These positions are supported by grants to Marshall Husssain Shuler from NIMH (R01MH123446) and NIA (RF1AG063783). Fellows are expected to stay for 2 to 3 years; positions are renewable depending on availability of funds and satisfactory performance.

Applicants should have a passion for behavioral neuroscience and neurophysiology, a strong neuroscience background, and expertise with relevant methods for systems neuroscience research. Successful applicants will have demonstrated research in experimental and/or theoretical/computational neuroscience, strong coding skills (Matlab, R, Python), and behavioral electrophysiological experience using multisite neurophysiological recording (Neuropixels or similar).

The Hussain Shuler lab is committed to the development of trainees. Our trainees have received NSF, NRSA, Visual Neuroscience Training Fellowships, and the Kavli NDI postdoctoral fellowship, and have gone on to careers in AI at Google and Amazon, into medicine, and as academics in tenure-track professorships across the country and the world. We have ample professional development resources here at The Johns Hopkins University, through the Department of Neuroscience as well as through the Kavli Neuroscience Discovery Institute.
