Experience the Future of Chattanooga's Historic Southside
Nestled in the Southside district of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the historic Southern Railway Building is now home to the Market Street Lofts - a residential community comprised of thirty-four privately owned condominiums.
Built in 1922, our building served as office and warehouse space for the railway for nearly 60 years. In 1982, when Southern merged with Norfolk & Western (creating Norfolk Southern Corporation), the building was abandoned and ultimately turned over to the city of Chattanooga.
Mainstream Development Group negotiated a purchase of the property in 2001, converting the second and third floors of the building to apartments. This conversion was one of the first downtown Chattanooga housing projects - starting a trend of numerous historic downtown buildings being repurposed and revitalized. The one- and two-bedroom apartments were know as the Southern Railway Lofts until 2007, when the developer transitioned the property to condominiums and began marketing residential units for sale. Most purchasers of the new condos performed extensive renovations and upgrades to their industrial loft properties.
Today's Southside is focused on creating a sustainable urban neighborhood;
Market Street Lofts is at the center of it all.
The first floor of the building was designated as commercial space and, for a number of years, served as headquarters for Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, a nonprofit housing organization, as well as other real estate/property management firms. In 2015, work began to convert the first floor to additional residential units and those 12 new units were marketed for sale in 2016.
