"The enormously prolific Marie Joseph Erb (1858–1944) has somehow escaped the attention of posterity, although the quality of his music would seem to be on a par with contemporary organist-composers whose works are far better known. Erb’s long life – he heard Berlioz conduct in 1863 and was still composing in 1944 – was focused on Strasbourg, where he was active as pianist, organist and professor, though he had studied in Paris, with Fauré, Gigout, Saint-Saëns and Widor, and later with Liszt in Weimar. This first album devoted to his organ music in almost 30 years sandwiches four lyrical chamber works between two towering sonatas."

The Alsatian (French) composer and organist Marie-Joseph Erb (1858-1944) seems to have a full and fascinating life. He was born in Strasbourg, and received his early musical education there - and apparently saw Berlioz conduct 'L'enfance du Christ' there in 1863. He later went to Paris to study at the Ecole Niedermeyer, and his teachers included Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Gigout, (at whose home he lived) and Widor. He returned to Strasbourg where he spent the rest of his life working as pianist, organist, and professor at the conservatory. In 1884 he spent some weeks studying with Liszt in Weimar, and since Erb was composing to within months of his death at 85, his 1944 elegies for mixed choir and soloists, dedicated to a pupil killed at the Russian front must be one of the very last works written by a Liszt pupil. I commend to any viewers the fascinating biography of him on a website maintained by his descendants: http://bit.ly/17wW7Ko . This piece is very much the style of music that Debussy was later to parody in his 1910 'La plus que lente'.
