Salmon Upcycle Project

PAST EVENT 2017

PURPOSE

Educating students and community members about current populations of Fall run Chinook salmon from the Klamath River through a trash art project and display.

In the Salmon Upcycle Project, students in Grades T-K, 3, 5, and 6 will be working with Melissa (Beachcomber owner and community artist and Shirley Loas (Yurok Tribal Member and TUS Board Member). Students will create salmon out of with collected trash and recycled or repurposed items and learning the Yurok culture and language. The salmon models will be displayed on stakes stuck in the ground on campus. They will depict two river runs, one with historically healthy numbers and one with current reduced numbers. Students will create pictographs and informative signs to display information about our current fisheries, highlighting concerns and causes for unhealthy river and salmon populations. (The display will be in the front of the school in the grass by the corridors)
