FAQs

Below are a few Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) many families ask........

Q) What gear will my athlete need for practice?

A) Athletes should bring clothing for both indoor and outdoor training and a good pair of training/running shoes. For shoes... stores such Startline, The Running Room or Dick's Sporting Goods offer a good selection and the staff can help choose the right shoe for your runner. Racing spikes are also recommended. Athletes should choose spikes that are appropriate for their event(s). If you are new to track and not sure which events you will be competing in, wait until later in the season to make this purchase.

Q) What are the practice times and how long will practice last?

A) Practice begins March 9th. Senior High athletes begin at 3:00, Junior High at 3:15. The length of practice times will vary because we will be running different workouts each day. The average time will be 1.5 to 2 hours. JH runners that need to catch the late bus will be done by 4:45.

Q) How do the Junior High athletes get to the High School for practice or to track meets?

A) There is an activity bus that leaves MGJH and OJH each day after school and drops off near the locker rooms (Door C). For track meets, we will have a bus that picks them at the school and brings them to the meet. Please note that anyone returning from a track meet on the bus will be dropped off at the HIGH SCHOOL.

Q) I'm new to track. Which event group should I train with?

A) Athletes that are new to track should begin with the event area they feel most comfortable trying first. The first few weeks of practice all athletes will participate in "try it" activities to give the athlete the opportunity to try a variety of running and field events. The athletes and the coaches will then determine which events the athlete should participate in for each of the track meets.

Q) I'm concerned my son/daughter has an injury. What should I do?

A) Muscle soreness and fatigue is a normal result of training. However, if there is concern about an injury the athlete needs to notify their coach and be seen by the school's athletic trainer for an evaluation. The trainer will make a recommend a course of action. The athletic trainer can be contacted through the team webpage or through the Maple Grove Senior High site.
