LANGUAGE curated by SATORI CIRCUS

MAY 18 - JUNE 11

Open Reception May 19th 7pm - 11pm

"We use some form of language all the time, from our voice, to our bodies, to signage in the environment around us, to the written word, to what comes from our imaginations. We apply this knowledge to a selected surface whether it be clothes, paper, canvas, rock, steel, a dance floor or a theatre space. These are ways we communicate, sometimes together and sometimes alone. In some regard, we’re always telling a story, always performing, always sharing. This exhibition is a story of how different languages placed under one roof together can talk, move, listen and create a uniquely singular story. A story that contains thought, color, line, shape, personality, volume, guts and sacrifice. A story that melds together cultures and ideals. I think artists are very unique and different individuals, and through whatever medium we choose and work in, we are always communicating using our own language to reach out to the viewer." ~ SATORI CIRCUS

Upon seeing SATORI CIRCUS perform at 1515 Broadway in 2009, Jeremy Hansen approached SATORI CIRCUS and invited him to develop and curate an art exhibition at the River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte, MI.

Mr. Hansen was initially inspired by SATORI CIRCUS’ Art parade in Midtown Detroit, of that same year, where SC took followers and onlookers on an art walk along the Woodward Avenue, which began at the Scarab Club and ended at the WORK Gallery - A four to five hour continuous performance that went from one cultural institution to another.

SATORI CIRCUS has been a Detroit foundation and a leader for the performing arts in Detroit. He has inspired painters, photographers, sculptors, musicians, and of course performance artists. River's Edge Gallery has been a part of the art scene for over 30years, they continually promote and support local regional talent. This is why we are excited to have SATORI CIRCUS curate what will be an overwhelming response to “Language”, how artists communicate through their work and how the audience perceives and responds.

SATORI CIRCUS is a Detroit performance artist and has been since its birth, September 1988. Combining and weaving a myriad of the arts together - music, poetry (lyrics), film, theatre (German Weimer Republic & the absurd), slapstick, vaudeville, cabaret and movement - SATORI CIRCUS has carved an interdisciplinary niche out of the Detroit’s underground, which has slowly over the years, started to surface.Throughout the Midwest and Canada, SC has been acknowledged and applauded by local media and institutions, as well as folks in and out of the art circle as, “the Blueman Group of Detroit”, “the absurdist clown in grease-paint”, “To be seen for developing a new direction in art”, “Genuine and fierce…dismantling our every notion as to what we expected!” (There’s more, but this is a small space.

Recently SC has been on America’s. Got Talent and voted as Detroit’s #1 Theatre Group by Channel 4’s ‘Best of Detroit’…and as of Friday, April 27th, SATORI CIRCUS was the recipient of the Detroit Music Awards Outstanding Live Performance award.

Possibly, if you’re a Detroiter or happen through Detroit on occasion, you may have stumbled upon SATORI CIRCUS at events such as Theatre Bizarre, DAMNED, Torch With A Twist, The Dirty Show, Wonderland …and many more.http://www.satoricircus.com www.artattheedge.com
