Agnes Steers Snell married William Thomas Maddren in August 1874 and 6 days later they emigrated to New Zealand. Agnes's father and mother James and Agnes Snell emigrated in 1877 with the rest of her family. They travelled on the Waipua and on the same voyage her Uncle John Snell travelled with his children, his wife having passed away in 1873. They were all from the Penzance area of Cornwall, close to Madron.

MR JAMES SNELL. The death occurred at his residence, " Tridavoe Cottage," Leeston, on Wednesday, at the advanced, age of 88 years, of a highly respected resident in the person of Mr James Snell. Born at Tridavoe, Cornwall, in 1829, the late Mr Snell came to New Zealand in the ship Waipua, in January, 1877, and settled in Leeston, where he has lived ever since. Although unable to get about for a long time, the late Mr Snell enjoyed fairly good health, despite his great age, and up to the evening before his death he was to be seen seated on his verandah. He leaves a family of seven (three sons and four daughters), thirty-four grand children and thirty-eight great grand children. Three married sons and a married daughter are living in the North Island, two married daughters are residents of Christchurch, and a single daughter has been living at Leeston with her father. The funeral takes place at 1.30 p.m. to-day.
