MR JAMES MADDREN. The death is announced of Mr James Maddren, who was very well known in business circles. Mr Maddren had been ailing for some time past, but his condition on Saturday evening did not occasion any anxiety to his family. He chatted cheerily to one of his sons at about eleven o clock, but at about 1.30 he was found to have passed away in his sleep. Mr Maddren was a native of Cornwall, and was born in the neighbourhood of Penzance in 1844. He came to New Zealand by the ship Waipa in 1877, landing with his wife and five sons, one of whom was born on the day the ship entered harbour, on January 25. Entering the employ of Messrs Hale and Forbes immediately after his arrival, Mr Maddren worked his way upwards until he was able, some fifteen years ago, to enter into business on his own account as a manufacturer of rope, twine, etc. Some years ago he opened a branch at Winchester for the treatment of raw flax, and this has been under the management of one of his sons, while the Christchurch business had been conducted under his own supervision, and with the assistance of his sons, up till the time of his death. He was a member of the first committee of the Waltham School, and occupied a seat on the committee for a good many years. Mr. Maddren was also a member of the Employers' Association and of the committee of the Industrial Association. Mr Maddren' s first wife died some thirteen years ago, but he since married again. He leaves a family of six sons and two daughters. Two brothers and a sister, his only other surviving relatives, are resident in Christchurch. (Star, Issue 9592, 12 July 1909, Page 3)
