We’re excited to announce the initial formal establishment of K12 Media Arts Education in California, with the State Board of Education’s Jan. 9, 2019 endorsement of CA Standards for Media Arts! See State Superintendent Tony Thurmond’s recent statement here, which specifically details the inclusion of Media Arts. You may find the new CA Arts Standards here along with all of the information around the process and public input. Thanks to the Media Arts team that worked so well together in refining quality standards based on the National Core Arts Standards - Matt Cauthron, M. Antonia de Jerez, Justin Moodie and Dain Olsen.
We are now making solid progress to full establishment of Media Arts Education in California. Next up is the development of the Arts Curriculum Framework, with work beginning soon, and to be potentially adopted by the State Board of Education in May, 2020.
While this process is ongoing, we need to begin laying groundwork for Media Arts’ full establishment, possibly via legislation, which includes a credential and all institutional supports. Our supportive community in the Media Arts Education Coalition represents the variety of stakeholders - teachers, students, parents, artists, art organizations, media arts industry, higher education, etc. We need to continue to grow this community in order to assure this full implementation. Please join us in supporting that effort!
