Ripple 1 shaped drawing in black ink

Ripple 1 220 x 220mm hana fold/shaped ink on paper 2011

This piece which marries random shaping with the crisp fold, derives from an obsession with the origata flower (hana 花) fold, originally used for containing sewing implements*. Origata, slightly predating origami, is the art of Japanese present wrapping which, in a reverse of our way of thinking may sometimes have more significance than the present inside it.
