Aplin Lab
Research Assistant / Temporary positions
I expect to be advertising a lab manager position very soon, so keep an eye on this space! It will be based at the Australian National University for 3 years, and be open to all Australian/New Zealand Nationals.
I'm also looking to hire field assistants for fieldwork in Sutherland Shire/North Wollongong areas, likely for 3 months, starting May/June 2023.
PhD Students -
I'll be taking PhD students at the Australian National University from January 2023. Come join us! I don't have direct funding at present, but there are two options for scholarships - as an incentive, ANU has just raised the scholarship to 34,000 p.a., and I can provide top-ups on this.
For Australian & New Zealanders: contact me about applying in the domestic round, next deadline closing October 31st!
For all other nationalities: contact me about applying in the international round, next deadline closing April 15. International scholarships are competitive but not impossible, and scholarships provide the same income as for domestic students, with a tuition fee waiver.
Masters and Honours Students -
I'll be taking Honours students at the Australian National University (Research School of Biology) from January 2023. For current ANU undergrads, get in contact if you are interested in a project on the lab! I'm open to work on cognitive ecology of cockatoos (fieldwork or lab work), comparative analyses, or any theoretical work on cultural evolution.
I'll also be taking Masters student at the University of Zurich (Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environment Studies) from October 2022 onwards. Get in contact if you are a masters students at UZH and you'd like to work on any of the above questions! I can offer fieldwork at our study site in Australia working on wild parrots. We are particularly interested in recruiting people who would like to work on the potential cultural arms race between humans and bin-opening cockatoos
Postdoctoral Researchers -
While I don't have direct funding available at present, I can host postdoc fellows and support their projects at either at the University of Zurich or at the Australian National University:
Marie Curie Fellowships provide European nationals with 2-3 years of postdoctoral funding to come to Switzerland or Australia. Deadlines are usually in September.
DECRAS fund people of any nationality within 5 years of PhD submission to come to Australia. Next deadline (to start beginning 2024) is in December 2022.
For Swiss nationals, Swiss mobility fellowships can fund a 2 year postdoc in Australia and reintegration. Next deadline is in February 2023.
For Germans, the DAAD and Humboldt Feodor Lynen fellowships can fund a 18mth - 2 year research stay in Switzerland or Australia
Human Frontier Postdoctoral Fellowships fund international postdocs for 3 years. Applicants need to change research direction, and either: “broaden their expertise by proposing a project in the life sciences which is significantly different from their previous Ph.D. or postdoctoral work”; or “hold a Ph.D. from outside the life sciences (e.g. in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences)”. The next deadline is in September 2022.
