You can’t begin to look for Extant shoes with out consulting what has to be considered as the Shoe Bible ….. “ Stepping Through Time ” Archaeological Footwear from Prehistoric Times until 1800 – By Olaf Goubitz

The Book is a fantastic shoe reference with pictures and patterns of shoes, but the biggest problem with the book is that it is sorted by Shoe Type and not by date, place & culture – the info is there, its just hasn’t been cross indexed.

Any references from it will be put as Stepping Through Time By Olaf Goubitz – Page No: - fig plate no. for the shoes that are in this body of work.

Denmark:

The oldest footwear in Denmark are found in oak tree cists from the Early Bronze Age. In several of these have been found remnants of leather shoes, and in two cases (Jels and Skrydstrup - respectively.'s and women's Tomb) was so large pieces preserved that they have been based on a reconstruction of the shoe. It consists of an elongated piece of leather that has been folded around the foot, ie. without any real soles. In front of the foot is leather slotted up, and the shoe is assembled over the instep with a cord that is pulled through a series of holes in it as a modern ballet. Laces are then tied a couple of times around the arch and attached over the instep or omrking ankle. The shoe heel is combined with a vertical seam. In one grave (Guldhøj) was found a piece of a shoe, made of woven wool. Unlike leather shoes that had a separate outer sole and the upper part was sewn on. In Skrydstrup-girl's shoes, there were traces of grass, which has been soft and comfortable to walk on. In several of the oak tree cists are also found the so-called fodlapper, ie. rectangular pieces of wool fabric that has been wrapped around the ankle and lower leg as a sort of stocking. From Iron Age bog known more shoes of a roughly similar type as the Bronze Age.
