Stephen Roberts (1958-2022) was, before his sudden death in July 2022, an Honorary Associate Professor at the Research School of Humanities and the Arts in the Australian National University and an Honorary Fellow of the Shakespeare Institute in the University of Birmingham. Prior to this he was Visiting Research Fellow in Victorian History at Newman University, Birmingham, for many years a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences in the University of Birmingham and Head of Humanities at Hagley Catholic High School in Worcestershire. Much of his published work has been concerned with Chartism, including The Chartist Movement: A New Annotated Bibliography (1995), which was short-listed for the Besterman Medal, and The Chartist Prisoners (2008). His interest in Victorian and Edwardian Birmingham has resulted in contributions to local history journals and short biographies of, amongst others, the poet and antiquarian John Alfred Langford and the photographer and Tory politician Sir Benjamin Stone.
