Ants of Reserva Natural Kahka Creek, Nicaragua

This is a working list of the ants of Reserva Natural Kahka Creek, Nicaragua, based on Project LLAMA sampling. Specimen records have been uploaded to the AntWeb database and are periodically updated.

There is a minimum of 186 species so far recorded.
Kahka Creek is a privately managed preserve within the larger Rio Wawashang Nature Reserve. It is located in the RAAS department near La Laguna de Perlas and the towns of Wawashang and Pueblo Nuevo. The area is an expanding farming frontier. The preserve is about 600 hectares of mixed primary and secondary forest and in 2005 it was hit by hurricane Beta, flattening most of the larger trees. Another hurricane hit in 2009, further affecting the forest. As a result, the preserve contains almost no closed canopy forest and the understory is densely vegetated. Kahka Creek is managed by FADCANIC, an NGO that also has a forestry technician school that serves the region. The preserve maintains a staffed research station at the edge of the park. The miniWinkler transects for LLAMA were done in areas that used to be tall primary forest, rather than pastureland. Both transects were between 0-50 m elevation.
